The Coalition government has stepped up its process of decentralisation and devolution of power to local authorities and their communities. Local authorities will have the liberty to make decisions about allocation of resources free from central government guidelines. An increasing role for the VCS to deliver public services is expected. VCS organisations are expected to have a key role to play in identifying needs as well as delivering services. This page deals with policies that have an impact on funding, commissioning and procurement for the VCS.

The Big Lottery Fund has announced the final 50 areas, which will receive funding from its £200million Big Local scheme, including Elmton & Cresswell, Grassmoor & Hasland, Central Boston, and Kirk Hallam in the East Midlands.

Half of local authorities made disproportionate cuts to VCS

Half of local authorities in England reduced the amount of grant funding to the voluntary sector between 2011/12 and 2012/13 disproportionately, compared to the amount their own budgets have been reduced by, according to research from Compact Voice.

Small and medium sized charities reported deficits of more than £300million in 2011, compared with an overall surplus of £325million in 2007, according to an analysis of the latest accounts by the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF).
