A briefing on good practice in safeguarding children and young people aimed at schools, colleges and academies has been published by the NSPCC Safeguarding in Education Service. The Home Office has published Advice to Parents and Carers on Gangs. The leaflet provides information to help parents identify and respond if their children are affected by gangs and states that the behaviour of a small number of young people who are involved in gang activity can have a significant impact on communities and families. The Schools Health Education Unit has published Young People into 2013. The report contains over 100 health-related behaviour questions and answers from over 68,000 pupils between the ages of 10 and 15 about home, school, friends, food, family, drugs and exercise. Research Bods and Britain Thinks have published (Ex)Aspiration Nation 2013, a report exploring the aspirations and expectations of young people and their parents. It found that young people aspire to work and home ownership rather than designer brands or being on the television; they would rather work than be on benefits, even if benefits pay more; and are somewhat unrealistic about the type of jobs that may be available, and how much they will earn. The Office for National Statistics has published updated teenage pregnancy statistics for quarter one of 2012. It shows that the overall rate for England is 30.5, compared to 31.4 in the same quarter of the previous year. The All Party Parliamentary Group on Financial Education is conducting an inquiry into vulnerable young people and financial education. The deadline for responding to the inquiry is the end of July. The Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) has published a report into self-generated, sexually explicit content of young people on the internet. Findings from the report include that 88 percent of content assessed by the IWF hotline in September 2012 had been taken from its original upload source and put somewhere else. The National Housing Federation has published a new report titled Housing Britain’s Future, which looks at what Britain’s housing crisis means for young people. Key findings include that from 1982 to 1990, England saw a jump in birth rates of 13 percent; the number of homes being built in the 1990s dropped by around 14 percent; the average price of a home in England for a first-time buyer in 2012 was £173,185 – nearly 10 times the average wage for 22-29 year olds; nearly three million adults aged 20 – 34 are living with a parent, an increase of 500,000 or 20 percent since 1997; and a further 700,000 young people are expected to be living with parents by 2020. Charity for youth homelessness Centrepoint has published a report mapping the number of extra housing units needed for young people. The report states that the shortfall of sub-market homes for young people is estimated to be 140,344 at present; under 25s suffer disproportionately from the overall shortage of sub-market housing as a result of increased demand; and there are already an estimated 9,161 young people living in hostels who are ready to move but unable to move out due to lack of suitable housing.
