Stop ticking the box

Taking place on Monday 16 March from 9.30am to 4.15pm at the NSPCC National Training Centre, Leicester LE4 1EZ, this health event will share and showcase the best public involvement in and around the East Midlands

The East Midlands Academic Health Science Network (EMAHSN), supported by their partner organisations throughout the East Midlands, is hosting this major event to showcase innovation in public involvement.

This event will bring together pioneers in the field of patient and public involvement from the East Midlands and elsewhere in England to share how health and social care services can accelerate the adoption of innovative practices. It will provide a showcase for innovation in how to carry out health research, train healthcare workers and deliver high quality healthcare in partnership with patients and the public.

The event will bring together public contributors and staff. Each presentation will be co-delivered by a public contributor working alongside a staff member and will illustrate how public contributors can add value to every aspect of health and social care activity.

The event is aimed at those who use health or social care services, have a relative or friend who does, or work in teaching, research, clinical or social care provision, management or commissioning.

The programme will include:

  • National leaders in public involvement, including Raza Griffiths from the National Survivor User Network, Simon Denegri, Chair of INVOLVE at the National Institute of Health Research and David Gilbert from the Centre for Patient Leadership;
  • Exploration of some key challenges with national pioneers, such as Professor Sarah Hewlett, who has co-authored many publications with lay authors, and Dr Dina Poursanidou, who has an international reputation in considering issues around ‘living in both worlds’ – working for services whilst using them too;
  • Initiatives already taking place in the East Midlands, such as ‘user-managed’ organisations delivering training for doctors and social workers, lay reviews of funding proposals and public involvement in staff recruitment;
  • Opportunities to explore how to make further progress towards true coproduction in the East Midlands;
  • Networking opportunities and information areas; AMD
  • Details of the EMAHSN programme to support innovation in public involvement

The organisers would this event to have an equal number of public contributors and staff attending, so they encourage interested parties to attend as a duo, one paid staff member and one member of the public wherever possible. This will also help delegates to take the learning back to their organisation more effectively.

Places are limited. To book visit www.eventbrite.com/e/stop-ticking-the-box-tickets-15300312647.

The organisers are also interested in receiving poster presentations showcasing best practice from around the region and are offering exhibition space free of charge. If you are interested email liz.mcintyre@nottingham.ac.uk.

Lunch and refreshments will be provided. If you attending as a member of the public the organisers can reimburse delegates travel costs.
