Review of Public Health Skills and Knowledge Framework Consultation Events

The Public Health Skills and Knowledge Framework has been scheduled for review during 2015 and Public Health England is facilitating local events to engage the whole workforce in the review process, including in Cambridge on Monday 23 February and Birmingham on Monday 30 March from 10am to 12.30pm.

The review, which was identified in the Healthy Lives, Healthy People: public health workforce strategy, is important because the framework underpins the development of training curricular and job descriptions, as well as providing a benchmark for job evaluations and the setting of standards.

Because of the changes in organisational responsibilities in England, and the review of public health functions across the UK and globally, the framework needs to reflect what the current workforce is delivering, and support the development of careers in public health in the future. The framework will also underpin the developing skills passport which needs to resonate with all sectors, including local authorities, civil service, NHS, VCS and others.

The events will be relevant to public health workers at all levels, and their employing organisations and the input of front-line workers at all levels will be important to ensure that the framework accurately represents what people are doing, or need to be doing.

Delegates should attend the events if they:

  •  Want to learn more about the review;
  • Regularly use the framework and want to influence any changes that might be made;
  • Work is a specialist area e.g. health intelligence, and have a view on how this function is understood and represented in the public health system;
  • Don’t know about the review – this event will make them aware of what it is and how it could impact on how public health functions are represented in the future for the public health workforce in the UK.
