Creativity & the Adolescent Brain

Taking place on Thursday 3 July from 10am to 4pm at Snibston Discovery Museum, Coalville, this course focuses on the significant brain development that occurs between the ages of 11-25, and the impact that art and cultural experience can have at this time.

The cost of this course, delivered in partnership with the Child Learning and Development Advisory Centre, is £35 per delegate including lunch.

During the morning the course will look at the changes occurring in the brains of young people, providing insight into new research which helps us to understand how these young people learn and behave.

During the afternoon it will look specifically at the role of arts and creativity in supporting young people's development into adulthood during this vulnerable period.

The session will demonstrate how powerful the arts can be when working with young people, through their ability to:

  • Increase the bio-chemicals necessary for growth, and decrease the stressor hormones, which inhibit learning, problem solving and decision making;
  • Strengthen the parts of the brain responsible for social and emotional competence;
  • Give young people strategies for managing difficult emotional states often associated with this age group; and
  • Positively channel emotional states responsible for behaviours such as risk-taking.

Throughout the day the course will also;

  • Refer to case studies demonstrating how creative and artistic activity works practically across a range of young people’s settings;
  • Practically participate in a number of creative activities which work support young people’s brain growth; and
  • Facilitate information sharing to enable participants to share experience and share practice.
