Young people and gangs

The Home Office has published a review of the operation of injunctions to prevent gang-related violence.

Gang injunctions were legislated for in the Policing and Crime Act 2009 and the injunctions have been available for use with 14 to 17 year olds since January 2012 following the 2011 riots.

Key findings from the review include that:

  • The gang injunctions reported were all against male respondents;
  • 88 gang injunctions have been put in place but only two were taken out against under 18s;
  • The Government will produce an up to date reference document, which lists all available legislative powers to tackle gang activity to support police and local authorities in their use of gang injunctions, as well as a commitment in the Ending Gang and Youth Violence Annual Report 2013; and
  • As part of the move of gang injunctions for under 18s currently issued within the county court to the youth court, advice, best practice and support will be provided to local authorities, police, the judiciary and court staff.
