London 2012: Have We Inspired A Generation?

Legacy Trust UK, set up to create a lasting cultural legacy from London 2012, has published London 2012: Have We Inspired A Generation?, a report looks at the impact that the Games had on young people across the UK.

The report presents findings of independent research of over 1,000 individuals aged between 16 and 25, representing each nation and region of the UK, to find out what impact the Games had on them, what they really thought and what should happen next.

Those involved in London 2012 projects were positive that their participation would benefit them in the future, with 78 percent experiencing growth in confidence and 86 percent more willing to try new things. Of these, 73 percent have gone on to participate in further projects. The impact of London 2012 went beyond sport to become a showcase for UK culture, with 65 percent of young people more likely to join a local arts group as a result.

However, a sense that something should be done to maintain the level of opportunity offered during London 2012 prevailed, with individuals asking what opportunities continued to be available to them and the younger generation now that the Olympic and Paralympic Games are over.

Of those who had not participated in projects, half wished on reflection that they had taken part and hoped for similar opportunities in the future, though the majority believed that London 2012 touched their lives in some way.

Attitudes to disability appeared to have been greatly influenced by the Paralympic Games, with 70 percent identifying Paralypians as role models and the majority commenting that they had more respect for people with disabilities as a result the Games.
