Young people in the labour market

The Office for National Statistics has published new Labour Market Statistics, estimating the number of young people in the labour market from October to December 2012.

Key statistical figures include:

  • 3.71million 16 to 24 year olds were in employment October to December 2012, up 29,000 from July to September
  • 2.56million 16 to 24 year olds were economically inactive (including those in full-time education), down 54,000 from July to September
  • 974,000 16 to 24 year olds were unemployed October to December 2012, up 11,000 from July to Sept
  • The unemployment rate for 16 to 24 year olds was 20.8% for October to December 2012, virtually unchanged from July to September.
