Campaign for Voluntary Sector Archives

A campaign for Voluntary Sector Archives has been launched. The campaign, which has grown out of concern for the neglect of sector records, will include a website at with guidance documents to help VCS organisations manage their archives and records and/or make informed decisions about depositing records in an appropriate repository.

The Campaign has grown out of concern for the neglect of archives and records across the VCS. Unlike public records produced by government, there is little legal protection for charity archives. Yet it will not be possible to write the history of modern Britain without using the records of voluntary organisations.

The archives will also be an important part of the charity sector’s wider public benefit responsibility, containing what may be otherwise unrecorded histories of people and communities.

The Campaign hopes to encourage all charities, voluntary organisations, trusts and foundations to take responsibility for their archives by providing for their management, preservation, use and promotion.
