8 October East of England PPP Involvement Network Event – Post event page

Introduction

Wellbeing East hosted the first East of England Patient and Public Participation Involvement Network event in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire on Wednesday 8 October.

Twenty two participants, from a range of backgrounds, including CCGs, Healthwatch, local authorities, area teams, patient participation groups and the voluntary and community sector attend the half day network event, which included news and updates on Involvement and a lively debate about patient and public participation in the East of England and which aspects of the Involvement programme might be able to add value to the work already taking place.

Behavioural Insight Team

The network event also featured a workshop delivered by the Department of Health’s Behavioural Insight Team. This interactive workshop helped explain what is meant by ‘behaviour’ and why it is important to think about how people behave. It introduced a simple framework to techniques for encouraging a particular behaviour and included some real life examples of trials run by the Behavioural Insight Team and others, which demonstrate the potential of the approach in health and social care. Participants also discussed why it is important to test what might work in behaviour change and looked some at simple techniques for doing so.

“…many of the biggest policy challenges we are now facing – such as the increase in people with chronic health conditions – will only be resolved if we are successful in persuading people to change their behaviour, their lifestyles or their existing habits…”

The Behavioural Insight Team, often called the ‘Nudge Unit’, applies insights from academic research in behavioural economics and psychology to public policy and services.
