Diversity in the charity sector

An analysis of ethnicity in senior positions in top 50 charities by Third Sector magazine has shown a bias towards white men.

The 2011 census revealed that 14 percent of people living in the UK are non-white, with a higher proportion in some cities. In London, for example, 40 percent of residents are non-white, in Birmingham the figure is 47 percent.

However, the figures for the leadership of the top 50 fundraising charities fall short of these proportions according to the research. In these charities, only 12 percent of chief executives, six percent senior management team members and eight percent of trustees are non-white.
