A new project has been launched by the Home Office and NUS to tackle the culture of binge drinking by encouraging responsible drinking across England and Wales. Seven universities, including Loughborough and Nottingham, have signed up to the 12 month pilot scheme, which aims to reduce alcohol-fuelled crime and disorder as well as preventing health harms. It will also award certain universities accreditation allowing them to take action to prevent alcohol-related initiation ceremonies, pub crawls or drinking related anti-social behaviour, and there are plans for responsible drinking communications campaigns, training for university staff and social alternatives on licensed premises.
