Young people’s views on poverty

The Children’s Society has published Through Young Eyes, a report which examines child poverty in the UK from the views of children and young people.

Key points from the report include that:

  • Currently over three million children live in poverty in the UK today;
  • 4 in 10 children and young people thought that childhood poverty would increase over the next 10 years while less than 1 in 10 thought it would decrease;
  • Of those who said they thought their family was ‘not well off at all’ 76 percent said they often worried about how much money there is to go around in their family; and
  • More than half who thought their family was ‘not well off at all’ said their home was too cold last winter and a quarter said that their home had damp or mold.

The project continues through the Children’s Commission on Child Poverty, a project which will run for 18 months from October 2013 to January 2015. 15 young commissioners will lead an investigation into the realities of child poverty with the support of The Children’s Society.
