Volunteering opportunities

A report by Generation Change has found that it is a postcode lottery in terms of opportunities for volunteering and social action for young people.

Key findings from the report include:

• London offers the most opportunities for social action for young people, followed by Birmingham, Cardiff and Coventry;
• Being in a large town is no guarantee of opportunities to take social action, with Liverpool, Bournemouth and Stoke on Trent absent from the top 20 hotspots;
• 94 percent of 900 young respondents surveyed thought there should be more volunteering opportunities for young people; and
• 42 percent of those who have taken social action would do more if they could move easily between opportunities.

Generation Change has also collated real programme data from its member organisations to create The Social Action Map, the first picture of where youth social action takes place. It shows that over half a million young people between the ages of 11 and 25 take part in different forms of sustained social action programmes, in over 20,000 communities and schools in every part of the UK.
