NEETs statistics

The Department for Education has published NEET statistics quarterly brief: April to June 2013, which sets out the latest statistics available on NEET in England from the Department for Education 16 to 18 Participation SFR, the Labour Force Survey, and regional NEET figures.

The statistics show that:

  • When compared to the same quarter in 2012, the proportion of 19 to 24-year-olds who are NEET fell by 0.5 percentage points (24,000) to 18.3 percent (767,000);
  • When compared to the same quarter in 2012, the proportion of 16 to 24-year-olds who are NEET fell by 0.8 percentage points (51,000) to 15.5 percent (935,000); and
  • When compared to the same quarter in 2012, the proportion of 16 to 18-year-olds in education or training increased by 2.2 percentage points (27,000) to 83 percent (1,526,000).

In addition, the Local Government Association has published Hidden Talents: National Programmes for Young People, an assessment of the success rates of central government funded employment and skills programmes for young people.

Key findings from the report include:

  • ‘Starts’ on nationally-funded employment and skills provision for 16 to 24 year old NEETS fell sharply in 2011/12 and recovered in 2012/12 but remain 10 percent below 2009/10 levels;
  • Educational participation for 16 to 17 year old is at record levels of 85.6 percent.
  • 19 to 24 NEET proportions have been rising, particularly among young men; and
  • 10.3 percent of JSA 18 to 24 year olds who started the Work Programme in June 2011 had experienced six months in paid work by the end of June 2012.
