NEETs survey

A survey of more than 1,000 young people by UCU and ComRes has found that young unemployed people feel marginalised, pessimistic and lacking in control over their own lives.

Key findings from the survey results include:

  • 26 percent of NEETs surveyed had been out of work, education or training for more than three years
  • 68 percent said that they want to be working full or part-time a year from now, but only 41 percent believe that they will be doing so
  • 47 percent said that their lack of experience was the main barrier to work, education or training
  • 39 percent reported stress and anxiety as a result of not being in work, education or training, while 33 percent reported depression and 37 percent reported rarely leaving the house
  • 71 percent agreed with the statement that ‘with the right support, people like me could contribute a lot to this country’.
