View from the Chair
The continuing deluge of more grim news regarding the abuse of young people is depressing although as I desperately look for some glimmer of good news, there is at least some small satisfaction that there seems to be a renewed (or is it just starting for the first time?) vigour amongst the police and other agencies to tackle this crime.
I do not doubt the complexities of the task ahead, nor do I have any expectations that we will see the sexual exploitation of young people wither and die. Tackling ‘the crime’ with the result of a few evil men (yes, I know that women can also be abusers) ‘locked up’ may satisfying the tabloid headlines, the bigger challenges include the long term care of the victims and changing the mind set of potential abusers. Nor do I jump on the band wagon that sexual exploitation is the unique prerogative of certain groups. As I have mentioned before in these introductory lines to our Newsletter, we cannot assume that these are problems that are alien to the East Midlands.
I was hoping to find something uplifting and inspirational to end my opening paragraph but words, mood (and time) fail me, although I note that the ‘changing the mind set of potential abusers’ I referred to earlier may be in part be addressed by the NSPCC’s Turn the Page initiative, for more details see the newsletter.
