EMVY E-bulletin

September 2014

Welcome to our monthly EMVY (East Midlands Voluntary Youth) e-bulletin. If you have any comments, would like to submit articles, events and other news for inclusion within later issues or would like to sign up to receive this e-bulletin, please get in touch by emailing emvy@one-em.org.uk.

View from the Chair

The EMVY team are working on two forums (fora?) in the next few months – one provisionally entitled ‘technology and working with young people’, which we are hoping to run shortly, and early next year (and in the run up to the General Election) we’re also planning to hold a forum on ‘young people and democratic participation’ (hopefully greater minds than mind will come up with a slightly more engaging title before too long).

However EMVY are not the only ones running events in the East Midlands, which will be of interest to EMVY members – check out later in this newsletter for details of the ‘Gang – prevention and intervention that’s Work’ conference in Nottingham in November.

Many of us will have a DBS (formerly known as a CRB) but I have been surprised when talking to colleagues (I’m too miserable to have friends!) about the lack of knowledge about the ‘Duty to Refer’. Details regarding this statutory requirement can be found at www.gov.uk/government/collections/dbs-referrals-guidance--2.

After looking at this if you feel you might be responsible in your organisation for initiating  DBS Referrals then I would recommend the ‘Duty to Refer’ briefing event being run by the Disclosure and Barring Service in Nottingham on Tuesday 21 and Wednesday 22 October. On each of these days there is a choice of either the afternoon or morning three hour session. Further details regarding these events can be found at www.gov.uk/government/news/dbs-duty-to-refer-events.

Youth workers and youth organisations

Youth Work Week, taking place from Monday 3 to Sunday 9 November, aims to provide an opportunity for youth organisations, youth workers and young people to celebrate their achievements and the impact of their work.

Young people and health

The What About YOUth survey by the Health and Social Care Information Centre, Ipsos Mori and the National Children’s Bureau and funded by the Government, asks young people about important subjects about their health and lifestyles and will eventually be used to make improvements to the health of young people.

Young people in crisis

The Children’s Society, Barnardo’s, Action for Children, Save the Children and NSPCC have called on politicians to invest in early support for children, young people and families before they reach crisis point.

Young people and employment

The Office for National Statistics has published the latest monthly statistics on the labour market.

Young people, politics and the law

Girlguiding has launched Girls Matter: Our Calls for Change, a campaign which asks politicians to listen to the voices of girls and young women in the run up to the General Election.

Young people and transport

The Liberal Democrats have pledged to include in their party manifesto for all 16 – 21 year olds in England to receive a 66 percent discount on bus travel with a Young Person’s Bus Pass.

Younger children at risk of gang association: prevention and intervention that works

Younger children at risk of gang association: prevention and intervention that works, taking place on Tuesday 4 November from 10am to 4pm at Nottingham Conference Centre, will focus on measures which deter and prevent children and young people aged five to 13 from becoming associated with street gangs.

Other youth related news and resources

The mental health charity, Young Minds, has published a report which identifies five main areas of concern to young people, which are bullying, stress at school, sexual pressure, no work, and lack of access to help.
