EMVY E-bulletin

August 2014

Welcome to our monthly EMVY (East Midlands Voluntary Youth) e-bulletin. If you have any comments, would like to submit articles, events and other news for inclusion within later issues or would like to sign up to receive this e-bulletin, please get in touch by emailing emvy@one-em.org.uk.

View from the Chair

In this month’s newsletter there are opportunities for young people to influence at national level, look at the article about the National Children's Bureau and also the Care Quality Commission. Both organisations are looking for young people with specific traits or circumstance, but for the right young person these are opportunities to potentially make a real difference.

However I am aware that these are ‘national’ projects and looking at the rest of the newsletter I note that most of the articles are about national issues and events (although the East Midlands cannot and should not divorce itself from ‘national’ issues and events), therefore I am delighted to see that that Safe Network are holding their next regional meeting in Nottingham on 6th November.

It would be great to see more news about what is happening in the voluntary youth sector in the East Midlands – but we can only publish what we know about. So let’s participate and contribute to those ‘national projects’ but lets us not be shy about promoting what we do in the East Midlands.

I had thought I had finished by ‘Chair’s Address’ but the recent news regarding sexual exploitation of 1,400 children over the last 16 years in Rotherham, as highlighted by Prof Alexis Jay’s report, disturbs me. Is Rotherham all that different from any of the town and cities in the East Midlands? Can we confidently say it is just a Rotherham problem, not our problem? These maybe just rhetorical questions, but if we ignore them…
