View from the Chair

I have never been given a horse; I am not sure I would want one, I am not sure where I would put it as my garden is marginally bigger than a Ping-Pong table and although I am not adverse to animal companions, a gift horse is not on my list of ‘wants’. All I know about gift horses is that you shouldn’t look them in the mouth. I am not sure if this a reflection of the propensity of gift horses to bite or a fear of equine halitosis.

Therefore it seems churlish to criticize the £16 million the Cabinet Office has put aside for their Youth Engagement Fund. According to the Government’s own statistics, there are presently 81,000 16-17 years who are NEETs in England and the Youth Engagement Fund has an aim to support 18,000 of them – so what about the other 63,000 of them?

I know there are other Government initiative to help young people to get into employment or education – as well some admirable programmes in the East Midlands – as highlighted at the excellent EMVY Employment & Enterprise forum held last month in Derby; but if this is the flag ship policy of our present Government with regards to how they are going to tackle the issue of youth unemployment, then £16million doesn’t seem that much.

To put it into perspective it is less than a quarter of what the Luis Suarez’s transfer cost Barca last month, and there is a gift horse whose mouth I would certainly not look into.
