EMVY E-bulletin

June 2014

View from the Chair

There is some deceptively encouraging news regarding youth people and employment, with the first article in this month’s newsletter proclaiming amongst other things that number of NEETs have dropped by a quarter since 2009 and the Government will be introducing a new curriculum ensuring proper preparation for employment.

My concern is that the new jobs that are being created are in the wrong place (too many in London, or to give Boris a break, not enough outside London) and too many jobs in low skill/low pay with limited opportunities for advancement.

Some of these issues are not new, but we need to take a holistic approach to the issues of youth unemployment (and youth under-employment), not just giving headline grabbing sound bites that will do little in the long term to help those young people in deprived areas of the East Midlands.

Simon Worsley, Chair of EMVY, Part of One East Midlands
