View from the EMVY Steering Group

Welcome to this month’s round-up of news and views. We hope you’ll take time to browse, peruse, share and apply your findings!

For me, the stats on youth employment make for interesting reading. On face value there are certainly encouraging signs and yet we know that so much more needs to be done in supporting young people with this vital transition.

I read an anonymous quote recently which stated that, “Telling a young person to ‘just get a job’ is the equivalent of telling the Sahara to ‘just rain’!”

Young people need not only employability skills, but also the right chemistry of life skills & social skills which will ensure a successful and sustainable transition into employment.

We shouldn’t become distracted by the need to move young people into or onto ‘positive destinations’, at the expense of being a supportive ‘travelling companion’ on their journey and helping them to unpack the life lessons en-route. Young people need more than information, they need fellow-travellers, role-models and mentors who will nurture and enrich their lives to help ‘set them up to succeed’.

I’ll finish my little rant there and conclude by thanking those of you who took the time to compete our recent survey. We’ve been busy as a network collating your feedback, taking on board your ideas and opinions and we’re confident that EMVY’s best days are ahead of us!
