Equalities
The Commission for Racial Equality, the Equal Opportunities Commission and the Disability Rights Commission have been replaced by the Equality and Human Rights Commission. The new commission brings together the work of the three previous equality commissions and also takes on responsibility for the other aspects of equality: age, sexual orientation and religion and belief, as well as human rights. With a new equalities bill, this rationalisation of equalities agencies and legislation looks set to stay. This section will keep you updated on Equalities legislation and how it affects the voluntary and community sector within the region.

Response to the East Midlands Skills Strategy Consultation
One East Midlands broadly agrees with and welcomes the content and approach of the East Midlands Skills Strategy. We do however have a concern with regard the delivery and ownership of such a strategy moving forward, not withstanding the recent announcement around the very uncertain future of the Regional Development Agencies.

The Equality Act 2010
The Equality Act 2010 is intended to provide a new cross-cutting legislative framework to protect the rights of individuals and advance equality of opportunity for all; to update, simplify and strengthen the previous legislation; and to deliver a simple, modern and accessible framework of discrimination law which protects individuals from unfair treatment and promotes a fair and more equal society.

Your Human Rights
"Your Human Rights" is a series of plain English, non-technical guides focusing on the practical relevance of human rights in the UK published by British Institute of Human Rights (BIHR). They are written directly for people living with mental health problems, disabled people, older people and refugees and asylum seekers who are in situations where they may need information on their human rights.

Outing Notts: A study into the substance misuse needs and experiences of LGBT people in Notts
This study explored the drug and alcohol using patterns of lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and trans-gendered people in Nottinghamshire. It was undertaken by the International School for Communities, Rights and Inclusion at the University of Central Lancashire.

Health Inequalities Briefing
Sir Micheal Marmot has produced a national review of health inequalities and how to tackle them. The review was published in February and we have produced a briefing on the findings. Please see the attached report.
