Government spending on young people

The Department for Education has published statistics on the expenditure by local authorities and schools on education, children and young people’s services in 2013/14.

Key points include that:

  • The total school expenditure on all local authority maintained schools is £30.6billion;
  • The local authority spending on children and young people’s services in £8.9billion;
  • 83 percent of the total schools spend is made up of the individual schools budget;
  • The number of maintained schools is 18,708;
  • The average balance across all local authority maintained schools is £117,000;
  • 93 percent of maintained schools have a surplus revenue balance; and
  • Local authorities spent £1.05billion on children’s centres, a reduction of £139.7million on the previous year.
