Attitudes of young women

Girlguiding has published the Girls' Attitudes Survey 2013, a survey of 1,288 girls and young women aged between 7 and 21 on equality.

The report shows that:

  • 75 percent of respondents feel that sexism is so widespread in our society today that it affects most areas of their lives;
  • 66 percent that there are not enough women in leadership positions in the UK; and
  • 46 percent that the lack of women in leadership roles makes them feel more rather than less determined to succeed themselves.

The Young Women's Trust, formerly known as the YWCA England and Wales and recently as Platform 51, has published Young Women - The Real Story.

The report, which includes evidence from research, focus groups and surveys of 1,067 women aged 16-30 and 2,010 members of the public, shows that:

  • Almost half of young women are filled with dread about their finances and think they will never get a job, with 32 percent in debt all the time;
  • 77 percent of young women said that they are judged by their looks and 56 percent lack self confidence;
  • 65 percent of the general public are worried that there is a generation of young people who may never be able to get a job; and
  • 78 percent of the general public agree that young women are under much greater pressure than young men to conform to stereotypes about beauty, weight and sexualised behaviour.
