HearNow Forward project

Action Deafness’ HearNow project, which was funded for three years from Big Lottery Fund’s Reaching Communities programme, has received new funding from the Big Lottery Fund to establish a continuation project.

HearNow was established to support people from the BME communities who have a hearing loss, in the Leicester area. The project supported both individuals living in the community, and Leicester based organisations from both public and private sectors, to make them more D/deaf friendly and accessible.

The originally funding for HearNow finished in March of this year. However, a new bid was submitted to Big Lottery Fund to establish a continuation project, to be called HearNow Forward, and Action Deafness has now been informed they have been awarded the funding.

The new project will focus on identifying people from the BME communities with an undiagnosed hearing loss, some of whom already know that their hearing is not too good, but have yet to follow it up, encouraging people to protect their hearing, to seek help as early as possible. It will also offer one-to-one guidance to support people to move on from where they are now, reducing isolation, increasing well-being, and progressing in terms of personal development.

The HearNow Forward project is due to start in July 2013 and will run until 2016.
